ABOUT KYUSHU AND OUR PEDALS
Message from Taro [head mechanic]
I worked a Japanese salaryman job for most of my twenties, until I felt a strong need for a completely new, long term challenge to wake up from the endless routine that had become my life. I added racks and panniers and Schwalbe tires to my aluminum Kona cross bike, bought some camping gear, and in 2010 began what became a four year bicycle journey, sort of around the world.
After that, I settled down in Fukuoka City. Like many people, I found it to be the most balanced and pleasant of the major Japanese cities. Fukuoka is consistently at the top of Asian city “livability” rankings, and has been the fastest growing city in Japan since around 2015. Even after more than ten years living here, I’m seriously still surprised by things like how many good (and affordable!) restaurants there are, how clear the water is at the nearby Itoshima coast, and how I can ride the subway from the airport to city central in around 20 minutes, for less than 300 yen. Add to that the diverse landscapes and activities across the island of Kyushu, and continuing to base myself here has been an easy decision. Kyushu is truly not to be missed for any explorer of Japan!
After working as a licensed bicycle mechanic for multiple bicycle shops around the city, I decided to start Kyushu Pedal. The concept is simple: provide very high quality, carefully maintained touring bicycles and gear that we ourselves would want to travel with, all out of a convenient location in central Fukuoka City.
We look forward to serving you.
